Well, I'm 13 years old and I've always been intersted in art. Watercolors doesn't feel write to me for some reason, so I want to try painting with acrylics. I already have the paint, a few brushes, and paper.I really feel this is something I should do, or at least try. So, i have a few questions.
1. What kind of brushes should I get? I like drawing flowers, and nature scenes. I've been trying to paint some flowers kind of with a thing called ( i think ) "seashell stroke" and i haven't been able to do it yet. I think it's probably cuz of the brush.
2. I'm planning to get an easel too, but i heard it's pretty expensive. Should I go out and buy one?
3. Should I get the painters set including the brushes, paint, easel, etc.. or should I just buy my own stuff?
4. Are there any good videos, or websites that'll help me draw flowers, and nature scenes?
5. If you're willing, can you give me advice on how to paint a little better. I pick up things pretty easily, so any advice is good. Thanks!
Amateur Painter?
First of all, don't invest a lot in any art stuff until you get the feel of what you are doing. A good begging brush set can be purchased at the dollar store/ This set should have a full set of brushes in it and the handles should be wooden. I am not talking about the plastic sets used for kid paintings. The handles should be very long. The bristles she a little but they are good to start off with. Since you have a computer type in paint with acrylics and all kinds of information should pop up. Oh, I for got, there are cheap easels at eh wall mart. they have a shelf bottom and are called tabletop easels. They only cost about 7 dollars.
Lastly, the library is a good source for how to books in the arts. You can borrow them for a while and practice step by step activities in the books. GOOD LUCK
Reply:I would be more than happy to be your teacher. First....paint acrylics on canvas not paper and any art supply store can tell you what brushes to use (they are whitish or really yellowish bristles) Go get some supplies then do this: type stock photos into your browser and start looking at photos on the web...you can even type in certain themes you like such as flowers and find a photo you like to practice from. Start there then email me and I will coach you on the next steps and teach you all I know even from college
Reply:I admire your interest in art and will to learn it.Since I am a poor man,I can tell you only the simple ways to learn to do painting.Visit a good bookshop, buy the artbook that satisfies you most. And follow the instructions.Good luck!
Reply:well. as an ameture painter i'm working on a painting to. (only with oils. i'm thinking about turning to acrylics.)
1. a basic brush set should be good for now, if you go into any art store, they will have simple wedge brushes you can start out with. add other brushes as nescesarry. a good brush for adding detail to nature scens is a fan brush. the fan brush is your friend.
2. depending on what you're painting on, you dont REALLY need an easle. if you're painting on a stretched canvas with a frame, just prop it against something and put ALOT of newspaper under it. if you're painting on just say...paper. you do need something flat to put it on, but i usually tack it to a piece of cardboard. (i'm very poor.)
3. it's usually best to buy your paint seperatly, becuase a set might give you something you don't need. i don't have much experience with acrylics, but when buying paints you only need cadnium red. (or red) yellow, blue, and burnt sienna(for shadeing) and white for highlights. if you really feel like you need it, you can get some black, but i don't use it that much.
with red yellow and blue, you can mix for the colors you need. just be careful to mix plenty becuase you can never seem to mix the exact two colors twice.
also, i don't know if theres one near you, but dick blick is haveing a wonderfull sale on paints and brushes untill...the twelth i think. but don't quote me on that.
thats all i can think of right now. good luck.
Reply:1. I buy my brushes at Micheals and they have a little pamphlet on the brushes. So when you end up at an art store its there will be info on what to get and the people working where ever can help you out
2. I have an easel. You can make do fine without one. I wouldn't get one till you are more serious or find a really good deal.
3. If you find a set with good stuff, go for it. But there are a lot of cheap sets out there, so watch out.
And about learning more, your best option by far would be taking an art classes. You can pick up needed skills and can have someone who is knows what they are doing to actually help you out. Even if you aren't always painting flowers and nature scene you'll still be developing useful skills you can later apply to whatever you want.
