My cat, Burrito, has recently become fond of destroying paper. Whenever she can get her mits on some paper, she rips it with her teeth into strips and bits. We try to keep paper away from her, but I'm wondering why she might be doing this. She has plenty of toys and we have a second cat that she plays with. The behavior developed a year after introducing the second cat so I don't think it's him. She also poops outside of the litterbox rather than in it, even when it's newly cleaned. We have two litterboxes with two different kinds of litter and she still won't use them regularly. Lastly, she likes to eat plants. We can't have plants or flowers - she even its the grape vines we leave in the bowl after eating grapes. What's her deal? Any ideas?
Why is my cat misbehaving?
As far as the paper thing goes, try balling up paper specifically for her to play with. Put a little catnip in the center and roll it up tight. This will teach her what is and is not appropriate to play with by giving her something that is HERS. Try to keep paper that is important in a binder or out of her reach.
Eating plants is normal. They are cats, very similar to kids in that they explore the world with their mouths. Keep plants in a room where the cats can't go. My plants are in the master bathroom because the cats aren't allowed in there. My plants thrive, and the cats aren't even aware they are there. They aren't missing anything, and I don't have to clean up potting soil. :)
Now for the litterbox problems... Litterbox problems can be caused by almost anything, but here are a few things to watch out for: Does your other cat attack her while she is in the litterbox? Are the boxes big enough for her? Many cats don't like to be bothered when they are doing their business, and if the box is too small, she may not feel she can go comfortably. most cats don't like to step in their feces. Try putting the 2 litterboxes in different places. Maybe it isn't private enough.
My bet is that they either aren't big enough for her or her kitty friend is harrassing her while she's trying to go, so she goes elsewhere. Good luck!
Reply:paper? i see this as an attention thing - almost like a game she is playing with you. mine does it and the object s change every now and then....he used to love the darn toliet paper, while it was on the roll. (THE LITTLE STINKER) it isnt too werid though...just keep the paper out of her reach and if you ever catch her just discipline as you normally would. now the pooping thins can be a number of things. is your litter box covered? if so - take the lids off. mine was doing the same thing - and i read there are times the cat odor is tooo much for them and if they have to poop it takes a lot longer so they wont go in it because of the smell - therefore pooping outside of the box. you can also lay foil or double sided tape right where he is pooping - they hate the foil or tape on the pads of their feet. the plant thing could be a lack of greens in their diet. look for food and treats that promote the greens that cats look for. alot of times a cat will eat thses things in order to make themselves throw up. i would just leave nothing out for the cat to eat - especially grape vines. i hope this helps....
Reply:i have a cat beans and she rips paper and chews on wood.she also poo's and pees on the carpet .when we have cleaned litter boxes. i think her problem is she and her sister fight alot and maybe she's marking her terrioratiry.. i wish beans would mark the litter box instead,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Reply:Sometimes animals behave badly if they want attention. like if your work schedule changed and now your home later, so less time with the kitty. It could be simply that she wants your attention.:)
Reply:SHE COULD JUST BORED WITH HER TOYS AND WITH THE OTHER CAT.PLAY WITH HER MORE OFTEN SHE COULD BE TRYING TO GET ATTION
