Area of a path explaination?

A rectangular flower bed measures 5 feet by 54 inches. The outside dimensions of a path around the bed are 7? feet by 81 inches. What is the area of the path?

The answer is 3807 sq inches, but i was wondering about the actual solution( scratch paper work to get the answer.)

Area of a path explaination?
calculate the outer dimensions, then calculate the inner dimensions (the big and small rectangles.) then you subtract the smaller rectangle from the larger one. works the same way with circular, triangular, any shape path. just calculate inner and outer dimensions and subtract, and you have the space leftover
Reply:The solution is to find the area of the bed and then the outside of the path and subtract the two.

Area of path = (87 x 81) - (60 x 54)

= 7047 - 3240

=3807 sq in
